Dependence on fossil fuels is causing global warming, the depletion of energy resources, and severe damage to human health and the environment. So we must wean ourselves from oil, coal, and other fossil fuels and chart a path to a sustainable energy future, a course marked by energy conservation, energy efficiency, and maximum use of renewable energy.
Priority in the development of sustainable energy should be in the following order: (a) local renewable sources, (b) renewable energy sited as close to the point of use as possible, (c) cogeneration that reduces fuel consumption, and (d) remote renewables.
Sierra Club policy is to protect environmentally sensitive areas in the siting of energy infrastructure and it is the special concern of San Gorgonio Chapter to implement that policy with regard to Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Lands in federal, state and local parks, wilderness areas, identified sensitive habitat, and other areas of outstanding value must be excluded from consideration as sites for energy production. The siting of energy facilities should minimize adverse impacts and there must be mitigation for any effects that do occur. New power lines should utilize existing transmission corridors.
